September 11, 2012 Public Hearing Adoption of the 2012 Millage Rates and 2012-2013 Final Budget


LEGAL REQUIREMENT Florida Statute 200.065(2)(e), states that: The School Board of Sarasota County, Florida, will soon consider a budget for 2012-2013. A public hearing to make a DECISION on the budget AND TAXES will be held on September 11, 2012, at 1980 Landings Boulevard, Sarasota, Florida. During such discussion, the governing body shall hear comments regarding the proposed millage rate. The general public shall be allowed to speak and to ask questions prior to adoption of any measures by the governing body. The governing body shall adopt its tentative or final millage rate prior to adopting its tentative or final budget.

1. STATEMENT REGARDING THE 2012 FINAL MILLAGE RATE AND 2012-13 FINAL BUDGET
Description

The 2012 proposed Required Local Effort Millage rate represents an 3.00% increase over last year's rolled back millage rate.  The total 2012 proposed millage rate represents a 1.27% increase from last year's rolled back millage rate.  The operating millage is required to hire staff for the school district, pay negotiated salary and fringe benefits to staff, and the cost of fuel, electricity, and other goods and services.

Minutes: 

Deputy Chief Financial Officer Al Weidner gave a brief overview and explained the purpose of this meeting is to give the public a chance to ask any questions on the millage rates and budget. He also stated that if the public wanted to view the documents, they are posted on our web site, or they can call or come to the Finance office at the Landings. He stated that we are in excellent financial condition. He thanked his staff, the Superintendent and the Board Members for their great team work. He also stated we should be proud of our accomplishments, as we are an "A" rated district and rank 4th the state.

Board Chair Caroline Zucker stated she felt we would not be in the excellent financial shape we are in without Mr. Weidner's history, experience, understanding and vision. She thanked him and his staff, but gave credit to him for his outstanding leadership.
